Japanese Katana Sword in T10 Steel

The blade of this Katana sword has been constructed from T10 steel in a Maru Lamination. The tip of the blade kissaki features a KIRIHA-ZUKURI style (triangle shape without curvature).

In accordance with Japanese tradition, the blade has been treated with a clay covering, applied on the entire sword except the cutting edge. The blade is then reheated and quenched in spring water. The combination of the quenching and the clay cover creates a significant temperature difference in the cutting edge of the blade and the rest of the sword. The hamon is authentic and all the way up to the tip. The result is that the Ha cools much more quickly than the rest of the blade, the molecules of the Cutting edge expand and push back the softer steel of the Katana blade and creating the traditional curve of the sword.

The Saya has been constructed from hardwood with a high gloss black lacquer finish. A black Sage-o has been tied around the bright copper Kurigata.

The balance of the blade is perfect and the sword is completely functional. It is well suited for Tameshigiri and other forms of cutting exercises done by those with proper training and supervision. A beautiful silk travel bag is included with this clay tempered Katana.

Clay Tempering

This Katana has been custom made by our Japanese traditional method, Clay tempering or differential hardening is when the Smith puts clay on the blade and leaves the edge clear. The blade will be heated to red then quenched into water. Therefore, the clay covered area will cool slower and will be less hard, which will help the blade to keep its flexibility while the blade will cool faster which will result in harder steel in the cutting edge. The crystal clear natural hamon line is achieved from clay tempering.
