This is the duo Japanese Ninja clay hardened T10 Katana and Tanto. They feature a traditional black round Tsuba. The blade of the sword has been constructed from differentially hardened T10 with a Gunome hamon.

Blade: both blades have been constructed from differentially hardened T10 with a Gunome hamon. They feature  medium niku with a high shinogi to increase the cutting plane. The blade comes fully sharpened, and full tang. The short Tanto is perfect for training due to its light weight.

Saya: both sayas are constructed from black lacquered hardwood. The kurigata is polished with a high quality black chemical fiber sageo.

Tsuka: The habaki is brass. The fuchi and kashira are made of metal alloy and have a matching plain black design. The tsuka core is wooden with black samegawa and black fiber ito. Both handles have two bamboo pin mekugi.

How important is differential hardening?

A differentially hardened katana (as opposed case hardened or tempered) has a hardened edge and a soft spine.  The edge is hardened so it will retain a sharp edge while the spine is left softer so it will bend and not break.  This is usually done with a traditional clay coating tempering process. Differential hardening is key to making a battle ready katana that will be used for extensive tameshigiri (test cutting).  Our expectation is that a shinken should survive at least 10,000 tatami omote cuts (10 years of heavy use) and only need minor sharpening after every 500 (six months of heavy use).
