Maintaining the blade is to keep it clean and sharp. This operation is to conduct carefully and delicately to avoid cuts and wounds. There are particular tools to use while proceeding: Stone Powder ball, Rice paper and specific Oil. Oil from previous cleaning process is to be removed before proceeding. The powder ball should be taped on the blade every two or three inches, 

and then uses the rice paper to rub on the blade until the edges of the blade are cleaned and polished. If the process is not successful, you can use water or some other solvent to clean the blade then start over the maintaining process. At the end, it is important to apply some oil drops on the blade and spread them using a rice paper or a piece of cotton cloth.
